Noon Sakinah refers to (ن) with a sukoon, while Tanween refers to double vowels (ً, ٍ, ٌ). These rules dictate how these sounds are handled.

When Noon Sakinah or Tanween is followed by certain letters, the sound is softened with a nasal tone (Ghunna).

Ikhfa Letters : (ف ق ك ت ث ج د ذ ز س ش ص ض ط ظ)

Example : In “مِنْ شَرِّ” (min sharri) , the noon sound is concealed with a nasal tone.

If Noon Sakinah or Tanween precedes throat letters ( ء, ه, ع, ح, غ, خ ), the Noon is pronounced clearly.

Example : In “مِنْ أَجْلِ” (min ajli) , the noon is articulated distinctly.

When Noon Sakinah or Tanween is followed by specific letters, the sound merges with the next letter.

Idgham Letters : (ي, ن, م, و, ل, ر)

Applies to (ي, ن, م, و) , where a nasal tone is added.

Example : “مَن يَعْمَل” (man ya’mal).

This applies to (ل, ر) , where no nasal tone is added.

Example : “مِن لَدُن” (min ladun).

When Noon Sakinah or Tanween is followed by (ب) , the sound changes into a hidden Meem with nasalization.

Example : In “مِنْ بَعْدِ” (min ba’di) , the Noon transitions to a Meem sound.

Some letters produce a subtle echo when carrying a sukoon. These letters are: (ق, ط, ب, ج, د) .

Example : In “يَقْطَعُونَ” (yaqta’oon) , the (ق) and (ط) have a slight echo.

Ghunna is a nasal sound applied to Noon (ن) and Meem (م) . It is held for two counts.

Example : In “مَن نَامَ” (man naama) , you hear a nasal resonance.

Madd involves elongating a vowel sound. Its duration varies from 2 to 6 counts, depending on the type.

Lasts for two counts.

Example : “قَالَ” (qaala).

Occurs when a Hamzah follows a Madd letter in the next word. Lasts 4–5 counts.

Example : “إِنَّا أَعْطَيْنَاكَ” (innaa a’taynaaka).

This happens when a Hamzah follows a Madd letter within the same word. Lasts 4–5 counts.

Example : “السَّمَاءِ” (assamaai).

Stretching is mandatory for six counts when a Shaddah follows a Madd letter.

Example : “الضَّالِّينَ” (addaalleen).

When stopping at the end of a verse, the vowel can be stretched for 2, 4, or 6 counts.

Example : “قَالُوا” (qaaloo).

Correct stops maintain the Quran’s meaning. Special symbols guide you:

Waqf Taam (۝) : Indicates a complete stop, marking the end of a sentence or idea.

Example : At the end of an ayah.

Waqf Laazim (م) : A required stop; skipping it might alter the meaning.

Symbol : (م)

Waqf Hasan : Optional stop, though continuing adds context.

Waqf Kaafi (قلى) : Marks the end of a thought but allows continuation without harm.

Waqf Mamnu (لا) : Prohibits stopping, as it could distort the meaning.

Symbol : (لا)

Saktah (س) : A brief pause without breaking your breath.

Example : “كَلَّا بَلْ” (Kalla bal).

Waqf Mutlaq (ط) : Suggests a good place to stop, as the meaning is complete.

Symbol : (ط)

Waqf Jaiz (ج) : Either stopping or continuing is acceptable.

Waqf Mu’anaqa (… …) : Choose one of two stops but not both.

Example : In “كَذَٰلِكَ…نَفْعَلُ”, stop at only one point.
